What is phentermine?

Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant. It is a stimulant related to amphetamine and is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance. According to the FDA label for Adipex-P, it is meant for short-term use, a few weeks, together with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise and behavior change.

Who may be a candidate?

The label describes use in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health problem. Whether it is appropriate for you depends on your health history, other medications and blood pressure. Some conditions rule it out, and our provider will review them with you.

Possible side effects

Dry mouth, trouble sleeping, nervousness, a faster heart rate and constipation are commonly reported. Tell your clinician right away about chest pain, shortness of breath or a racing heart.

Who should not take it

Phentermine is not for anyone who is pregnant or nursing, or who has taken an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days. Your clinician will check for other conditions before prescribing.

How it fits our program

Phentermine is one option in the Rapid Weight Loss Program. It is not given to everyone. Some patients do better with a GLP-1 medication or a nutrition-only plan. For a longer background article, see our phentermine appetite suppression overview.
